ANZAC Day is one of Australia’s most important national occasions. We commemorate ANZAC Day on the 25th April every year to remember those who served in the First World War. While the concept can be difficult for younger students to comprehend, teaching about ANZAC Day in the classroom is an essential part of any classroom’s history curriculum. Today, I’m sharing some of my favourite ANZAC Day activities for kids to learn about ANZAC Day at home and in the classroom.

Anzac Ted Directed Drawing

Directed drawing is a hit in our classroom! Your students will love seeing their Anzac Ted drawing transform whilst following the simple step by step instructions. You will be amazed at the results that even little hands can produce and the uniqueness of each child’s drawings.

This activity is the perfect accompaniment to the book Anzac Ted by Belinda Landsberry. You can find the book here:

How to Conduct Directed Drawing in your classroom or at home:

  1. It is best to use a large piece of paper (I use A3 cartridge paper or cardstock).
  2. Use the included directions to draw one small section of Anzac Ted at a time. It is most ideal if the teacher or adult models each step, then the children copy.
  3. After all steps have been followed, trace over your drawing with black marker.
  4. Now rub out all of your lead pencil lines carefully.
  5. Colour in/ decorate your Anzac Ted however you wish. I use watercolours or watered down Edicol dye.
  6. Display the art pieces to show off their unique creations!
